Thousands stranded at DIA as part of nationwide Southwest meltdown

Thousands of travelers are stranded at Denver International Airport (DIA) as part of a massive meltdown by Southwest Airlines. The airline canceled at least 300 flights at DIA Tuesday, marking the second straight day of mass cancellations. Hundreds of other flights out of DIA were delayed and at least 10,000 bags were left unattended. A Southwest spokesman says the airline continues to experience “disruptions” due to the lingering effects of winter storms. A leaked internal memo from Southwest issued on December 21 called it a “state of operational emergency” due to a high number of absences of ramp agents at DIA. The U.S. Department of Transportation is investigating what it’s calling an “unacceptable” rate of cancellations, delays, and a lack of customer service” on the part of Southwest nationwide.
