Key races to watch in Colorado on Election Day

The top race on the Colorado ballot – Democratic U.S. Senator Michael Bennet will seek a third term against political newcomer and construction firm owner Joe O’Dea. Democratic Governor Jared Polis is seeking re-election. He’s being challenged by University of Colorado regent Heidi Ganahl, who’s the only Republican holding statewide office. Eight congressional seats are up; one is a new seat in the 8th District, where Republican Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer faces Democratic state representative and doctor Yadira Caraveo.

In Larimer County, Justin Smith and John Kefalas are vying for a seat on the county commission in District 1. Toni Baker and Angela Myers are running for the clerk and recorder position.

A number of statewide propositions are also being presented, including whether a sales tax increase should fund healthy meals for all public school students, whether a state affordable housing fund should be created through a small portion of the state income tax, and whether alcohol sales should be allowed in grocery stores and via delivery services.

As of Friday, about 29% of registered voters had taken advantage of early voting. For those who still need cast a ballot, the polls are open until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
