As the longest government shutdown in our nation’s history continues, the costs are piling up. The Denver Post reports it could cost Colorado as much as $201 million a month. That number is based on salaries withheld from federal employees and the loss of food stamp benefits through the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP. Meanwhile Colorado’s Human Services department is urging people to recertify early—by noon Tuesday—so that they can receive food stamps for February before the funding lapses.
