Unfair Greeley City Council Representation Alleged In Lawsuit

The way Greeley’s four voting districts were drawn could be diluting Hispanic residents’ representation on the city council, a new lawsuit alleges. According to the Greeley Tribune,  Lisa and Brian Bernal, as well as Rachel Sanchez, who reside in Greeley’s Ward 1, filed the lawsuit on July 6 in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. The lawsuit alleges the city’s redrawing of the district lines in 2022 violated the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause by diluting the power of voters in Wards 1 and 2, which also contain a higher percentage of Hispanic residents.   The Greeley City Charter requires that the city be divided into four districts with populations that are as equal as possible.
