Evans sergeant cleared in shooting suspect wielding sledgehammer

An Evans police sergeant has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the shooting of a suspect. The Weld County D-A said the sergeant was justified to shoot 40-year-old Jacob Weirema, who was chasing a woman with a sledgehammer on the 3700 block of Salida Court in Evans in February. No bullets struck Wierema, who now faces charge of attempted murder, assault, and menacing. The woman he was chasing was hospitalized with minor injuries.
