Agencies team up to create safer roads after deadly year

State officials are hoping to not only reverse a deadly trend on Colorado roadways-they’ve got a lofty goal of reducing the number of deaths to zero. The Colorado State Patrol, CDOT and the Division of Motor Vehicles have teamed up to create the Advancing Transportation Safety Program. To do it, CDOT said they need safer vehicles, enhanced seat belt laws, tougher drunk driving laws, safer roads and education. The program will ensure troopers are more visible in high-crash areas. CDOT plans to invest money to improve rural roads, obtain grants to make roadways safer for pedestrians and bicyclists and expand other forms of transportation. Last year, nearly 750 people died on Colorado roadways, marking the highest rate in more than 40 years.
