Leaking natural gas well near Johnstown being monitored

State environmental officials continue to monitor a concerning situation in Johnstown. Residents reported a yellowish substance shooting into the air like a geyser last week after a plug on an abandoned natural gas well failed. It also left a foul smell in its wake. The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission said the substance they saw is wellbore fluid that’s a combination of oil, water, and drilling mud. They couldn’t tell 9News whether the substance was dangerous but advised residents to stay away from the well near Weld County Road 50. The site will have to be remediated. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is continuing to monitor air quality near the site.
