Colorado stiffens penalties for fentanyl posssession

A new law in Colorado aims to crack down on fentanyl possession. Starting July 1, those caught with more than 1 gram or 10 pills of fentanyl can be charged with felony possession. The previous law required possession of four grams or more to be charged with a felony. Supporters say this will go a long way towards saving lives while critics wanted to see a zero-tolerance policy for anyone caught with any amount of fentanyl. The measure also devotes $29 million to harm-reduction tools, including Narcan and expands drug addiction treatment in prisons. According to the Colorado State Patrol, fentanyl killed more than 700 Coloradoans last year, and the state’s overdose rate is rising faster than the national average.
