It’s joining fentanyl as one of the deadliest drugs on the street and police say they found xylazine, or tranq, in counterfeit painkillers in Greeley. According to the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Drug Task Force said the stash of M-30 pills they seized are counterfeit oxycodone tablets that are also known to often contain fentanyl. The combination of xylazine and fentanyl is known to place users at a higher risk of fatally overdosing. The DEA says administering naloxone — also known as NARCAN — is not effective in reversing a xylazine-related overdose as xylazine is not an opioid, but the agency still recommends using naloxone for someone overdosing, as xylazine is often mixed with opioids and the naloxone could help alleviate the symptoms of opioid overdose.
