Fort Collins program helps domestic violence survivors with pets

A program that aims to help domestic violence victims and their pets is named for a Fort Collins teen who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend. The Safehouse Safekeep program, run by Crossroads Safehouse, Fort Collins, and the Larimer Humane Society, was renamed the Danielle Hopton Safehouse Safekeep Program in 2021 following her death. The focus on pets comes because too often, survivors of domestic violence, stay in relationships because they love their pets. The Coloradoan reports the program allows victims to temporarily house their pets at the humane society without relinquishing their rights. The focus also centers around Hopton’s love of animals; she trained guide dogs and volunteered at the humane society. Hopton’s killer, Stephen McNeil, was sentenced to 40 years in prison last week.
