State pays Walden rancher who lost livestock to wolves

For the first time in state history, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has paid a rancher for the loss of his cattle after a pack of wolves killed a 600 lb. calf. The department paid Don Gittleson of Walden $1,800 for the single cow as part of its Game Damage Program, the Coloradoan reported. He’s still awaiting payment for the deaths of two pregnant heifers the wolves killed in January. The wolves are believed to have migrated from Wyoming into Colorado where they had six pups, marking the first time in eight decades that wolves have given birth in the state. A range rider from Fort Collins, who’s also an avid fan of wolves, now rides on Gittleson’s property at night to prevent future livestock loss by wolves.
