Retail sales take record March plunge; food, beverage sales up
The news Wednesday morning was worse than expected for U.S. retail sales, which were down a record  8.7% in March because of COVID-19, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  Economists expected sales to decrease about 8%.  Hardest-hit were clothing and clothing accessories stores, where sales were down a staggering 50.7% from the same period last year.  Not surprisingly, food and beverage sales were up 28% over the same period in 2019, driven by Americans stocking up for long periods of quarantine.

NYC revises COVID-19 death toll to over 10,000
New York City continues as the epicenter of the U.S. COVID-19 outbreak, as the city added nearly 4,000 additional deaths to the tally as “probable cases.”  These additional 3,778 cases include deaths reported in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and private homes in the last month.  The new numbers push the city’s overall death toll past 10,000 and bumps the state total to roughly 15,000.  New York Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot announced Tuesday, “We are focused on ensuring that every New Yorker who died because of COVID-19 gets counted.”

TSA screens fewest ever number of passengers Tuesday
The Transportation Security Administration on Tuesday screened fewer than 90,000 passengers in a single day for the first time ever, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to strangle commercial passenger air travel.  The TSA screened 87,534 people at checkpoints nationwide Tuesday, compared to 2,208,688 on the same weekday last year — around a 96% decrease.  Last week, a TSA spokesperson told ABC News, “it’s safe to say it’s the lowest since the days after 9/11.”  Wednesday morning, the TSA also reported 403 employees have tested positive for COVID-19. Out of those 403, 45 employees have recovered, and as previously reported three have passed away.

Good news!
Mom recovering at home after delivering baby while in COVID-19 coma
For Angela Primachenko and her family, there’s two times the welcome good news.  Beaverton, Oregon’s KPTV reports the Vancouver, B.C. woman is back home recovering not only from COVID-19, but also from delivering her daughter, Ava — while Primachenko was in a medically-induced coma, on a ventilator and fighting for her life.  Primachenko’s a respiratory therapist so she knew her odds as soon as she came down with COVID-19 symptoms.  Partway through her 17-day hospital stay, doctors delivered Ava at 34 weeks to protect her health, and her mom’s.  Since Primachenko’s still positive for COVID-19, she has yet to see her newborn, who remains at the hospital under close watch.
