Earlier today, Coach Medved informed me that he has accepted the opportunity to return to his hometown and to his alma mater to become the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota. I am incredibly appreciative of Niko’s leadership over the past seven years, and I wish him and his family the very best in their next chapter. While a national search for new leadership of our men’s basketball program has already begun, I am appreciative that Associate Head Coach Ali Farokhmanesh has agreed to serve as Interim Head Coach.
Colorado State men’s basketball is a championship program, earning the Mountain West Tournament Championship this year and having participated in the NCAA Tournament three of the past four seasons. Great student-athletes have chosen Colorado State and have achieved outstanding success in the Green and Gold that has propelled them to professional success in the NBA and beyond. Ram Country has made Moby Madness special and a real home court advantage. We will not miss a beat, and we will continue to build on the championship foundation in place.
Colorado State is a world-class university, and because of the exceptional talent and commitment from our students, coaches and staff great things are happening and will continue.
Colorado State Athletics is one of 14 programs in the nation to have football qualify for a bowl game, women’s volleyball earn an NCAA Tournament berth and men’s basketball advance to the NCAA Tournament. This is in addition to continued outstanding academic achievement with all student-athletes combining for a cumulative GPA of 3.259 last semester, a pair of All-Americans in women’s indoor track and field, and conference championships for volleyball, men’s indoor track and field and men’s basketball.
Colorado State is set to join the Pac-12, I am thrilled with the work being done on campus to position this program for long-term success. We have already begun the process of recruiting the next leader of the Rams men’s basketball program and will not have any further comment until we introduce that individual.
