Jury deliberations began Thursday in the murder trial a former LaSalle police officer who fatally shot a man outside Family Dollar last May. 35 year old Erik Hernandez faces charges in the May 3, 2023 death of Justin Reffel. Lasalle was in his third day on the job when he and another officer investigated a suspicious vehicle outside a store. The driver, Reffel, was inside and when he spotted the officers he tried to take off. The officers pursued Reffel outside as he ran to the car in the lot. As Reffel put the car in drive, Hernandez fired four shots into the driver’s side door, striking Reffel in the upper torso and killing him almost immediately.
