Officer at center of Boulder confrontation to leave force

A Boulder Police officer at the center of controversy after confronting a black college student picking up garbage outside his residence will resign next year.

An internal investigation into Officer John Smyly found no evidence to support accusations of racial profiling when he encountered Zayd Atkinson in March.

However, investigators did find that Smyly violated department policies, saying he escalated the situation to the point where additional officers were called in.
