Legislative Blog Update – 2/17/17

Ever wonder what your local official is doing in Denver? Ever want to know if they are representing your wishes with their votes? What bills are they sponsoring? And what is the difference between the Minority Caucus Chair and the Minority Whip?

Well, now you have an easy one-stop place to find your answers. A new blog will offer residents in Weld and Larimer counties the opportunity to see firsthand what their state senators and representatives are doing 60 miles south of our homes.

I have created a database with all the bills sponsored or co-sponsored by Weld and Larimer officials. Each has a link that will take you directly to the bill to learn more about it. You can access that document here. I will update them weekly.

Additionally, many of the representatives from Weld and Larimer have leadership roles. What do those titles actually mean? Well, I have your answer to that as well. The National Conference of State Legislatures gives the following definitions for positions your legislators hold:

Senate

President pro tem (Jerry Sonnenberg – Weld). The primary roles assigned to the president pro tem are to (1) preside over the Senate in the president’s absence, (2) exercise the powers and duties of the president in his or her absence and (3) assume other duties as assigned by the president. Sometimes, this is an honorary position, with few substantive duties assigned. In states where the lieutenant governor presides over the Senate, the president pro tem usually assumes duties associated with a president.

Majority Whip (John Cooke – Weld). The duties of the majority whip are to (1) assist the floor leader, (2) ensure member attendance, (3) count votes and (4) generally communicate the majority position.

Majority Caucus Chair (Vicki Marble – Weld and Larimer). The majority caucus chair generally (1) develops the majority caucus agenda with the principal leaders, (2) presides over the majority caucus meetings and (3) assists with the development of policy.

House

Minority Whip (Perry Buck – Weld and Larimer). The major responsibilities for the minority whip are to (1) assist the minority leader on the floor, (2) count votes and (3) ensure attendance of minority party members.”

Minority Caucus Chair (Lori Saine – Weld). The minority caucus chair (1) presides over caucus meetings and (2) assists the minority leader with policy development.

Assistant Majority Caucus Chair (Jeni Arndt – Larimer). Assists the Majority Caucus Chair.

I hope this information gets you started understanding your state legislature.
