It was a game that the Bears had to have coming down the stretch. And with the 77-72 win today over Idaho, the Bears get the season sweep and keep themselves cemented in the top of the conference as they pick up conference win number 11. It was one where Savannah Smith did what she always does…lit it up from the floor for 35 points.
But, today was not just the Savvy show. She finished with 35 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Helping out the scoring were the other three Bears to finish in double-digits in 10 from Ali Meyer to go with her 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Krystal Leger-Walker and Alexis Chapman each finish with 10 as well. The foursome scored the bulk of the points, with 6 from Isenbart and 6 from Kain to round out the scoring.
From the start this was a battle that both teams knew they needed to win, with each team finishing with 12 points after the first period. During the second period the Bears couldn’t miss their shots, outscoring Idaho 23-17 after shooting 55.6% from the floor and 50% from behind the 3-point line to take a 35-29 lead into halftime. The third period was just the opposite as Idaho came out and shot 53.8% to the Bears 23.5% and outscored them 21-12 in the period to take a 3-point lead into the final period.
The final period belonged to the Bears, as they shot 53.3% in the period to finish the game at 43.5%. The Bears outscored Idaho 30-22 in the final stanza behind 13 from Smith in the fourth. Smith did it from the free throw line too, making 9 of 10 with her only miss coming down the stretch on free throw number 10. With the win the Bears move to 11-4 in conference and the Vandals fall to 10-3. With five games remaining for the Bears they are right in the hunt for the regular season conference championship.
