Coming down the stretch of a tight game is always a spot where Jordan Davis wants the ball. Tuesday night against Pepperdine was no different, except this time it had a little more history attached to it. With 37 seconds left on the clock, UNC had seen its once 11-point lead cut to just four. The Bears didn’t panic they just got the ball to Davis and the senior came through going 4-of-6 from the line in the final half minute to seal an 88-80 UNC win. The last free throw, which gave him 32 points on the night also pushed him past Devon Beitzel on the Bears all-time Division I scoring list.
Troy’s Thoughts: Jordan Davis and Matej Drgon keyed the late move to gain the win–Drgon by ending a 4 minute drought by draining a three inside of eight minutes remaining and Davis by knocking down the late free throws. The biggest factor in UNC winning the contest: improving defensively in the second half. Pepperdine opened the game hot, shooting up to 57% with inside of eight minutes remaining in the first half. UNC was able to limit the Waves to 44% in the second half, giving themselves the ability to pull away. Cole Bergen impressed again by coming up with a team high eight rebounds in 22 minutes and Trent Harris got off to another strong start outside the three-point arc, finishing the night four-of-six.
