There were no surprises Saturday as Northern Colorado ended the home portion of its schedule with a loss to #5 Eastern Washington, 48-13.
As Aaron Rath and I addressed in the minutes ahead of the contest, this was going to be all about the running game. Between a 25 M.P.H. wind out of the northwest and what Eastern Washington has done on the ground as it pursues yardage records, it was a gimmie what the top key would be.
Unfortunately, it played out exactly the way Eastern Washington wanted it to. 292 rushing yards for the Eagles helped keep pressure on UNC all day, while the Bears only managed 42 on the ground. Add in three turnovers (all interceptions) and two failed attempts at converting on fake punts, and this was a steady day for Eastern Washington.
As I said in post-game, it also points out how far away UNC still is and leaves plenty of questions. None of them will be answered in the week, though, as the Bears have one more road game in front of them. Cold and possibly snowy conditions are forecast for Bozeman next Saturday.
