Lawmakers urge changes to Train Horn Rule

Colorado’s elected leaders are urging federal officials to update national rules on train horns. Rep. Jared Polis, Rep. Ed Perlmutter and Sen. Michael Bennet have sent a letter to the Federal Railroad Administration’s new chief Ronald Batory, asking him to fix the problem. Polis says train noise is “often unbearable” in Fort Collins, Loveland, and other Northern Colorado communities and its hurting economic development. The lawmakers say it’s time to update the Train Horn Rule in a way that makes creating quiet zones affordable. The letter to Batory says upgrading crossings in Fort Collins alone would cost $8 million.
