3/9/18: Reno, Day Five – Rare Air for the Bears
Just a thought before I dig into today’s notes: I’m helping myself out by putting the date in the title of these entries. Otherwise I might not have a good handle on what day it is after being on the road 10 days at this point.
Now, the biggest note of the day: UNC is the only school in the conference to have both of its teams playing in the semifinals. Montana, Southern Utah and Eastern Washington comprise the other men’s teams remaining. Idaho State, Idaho and Portland State are the women’s teams still alive.
Because of the schedule today, I don’t have a lot of time to get in depth this morning, but a couple quick highlights for the two games involving the Bears today:
Women vs. Idaho State: ISU has eliminated UNC from the tournament each of the last two years. There’s a measure of revenge the Bears would like to extract today against a Bengal squad they beat in both previous meetings this season. I’m curious to see what ISU has left in the tank after playing a highly emotional, high-paced overtime game Wednesday. UNC controlled Montana in their quarterfinal, so they should be in solid shape in terms of energy.
Men vs. Montana: After playing what may have been close to the perfect game to beat Weber State yesterday, can the Bears do it again today? I’ll be watching to see if Montana tries to pressure the Bears in the half-court they way they have in the two previous meetings, or if they’ll save their energy for other areas of the game. They also had to expend a bit of energy to get past North Dakota yesterday, while the Bears enjoyed control of their contest throughout.
Coverage of the women’s game from Reno follows The Hull Show at 1pm, with the men to tip at 6:35pm and I’ll pick up that broadcast at 6:05. See you on the radio!
