Illegal campfire smolders in RMNP

An illegal campfire sparked a wildfire near Bierstadt Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday. The fire was contained to a roughly 15 by 50 foot area and firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to the tree canopy. On Thursday, a park visitor reported smelling smoke in that area. Park rangers checked it out but didn’t find anything and couldn’t smell the smoke. Anyone who may have information about the illegal campfire is asked to call park rangers. Unseasonably warm and dry weather is expected this week, keeping fire danger high in the park. Campfires are never allowed at RMNP, except in designated campfire rings.
