Mead to start police department

Mead may soon have its very first police department. The town has been patrolled by Weld County deputies for years, but that may be changing soon. On Monday, the town board approved hiring former Lakewood police officer Mike Maudlin as its new chief. His first day is March 6. Maudlin is expected to set up the rest of his department and be up and running within the next couple of months. The department will be small, with only about 5 paid positions.
